A cavitation plate — technically known as an anti-ventilation plate — is a flat, horizontal marine hardware component mounted directly above a boat’s propeller. The marine supply market is full of mass-produced plastic and copolymer plates. The problem: plastic lacks the tensile strength required for the instant torque of modern electric outboards. Under hydraulic load, plastic plates suffer from micro-flexing — the plate deforms in real time, disturbing the water flow it is supposed to calm and letting air slip past the barrier. To compensate, plastic plates are made thick, and that thickness acts as a continuous underwater brake.

V4A stainless steel, internationally known as AISI 316, contains molybdenum (typically 2–3 percent), which dramatically improves resistance to pitting and chloride-induced corrosion in saltwater. Doesn’t Stainless Steel Cause Galvanic Corrosion on an Aluminum Motor?

A fair question — and the reason installation design matters so much. Stainless steel and aluminum form a galvanic couple in saltwater: the steel becomes the protected cathode, while the aluminum housing acts as the sacrificial anode. If you drill holes and bolt a large steel plate directly into an aluminum lower unit, the breached paint and the unfavourable cathode-to-anode surface ratio can corrode the aluminum rapidly.

A modern clamp-on cavitation plate solves this without drilling. The two plate halves close around the shaft over padded 3M isolation tape, so the factory-applied protective coating on the aluminum stays completely intact and the direct electrical pathway between the metals is interrupted. A hydrofoil (or “whale tail”) is a curved wing bolted to the lower unit that generates vertical lift at the stern. That helps heavy, stern-weighted combustion boats climb onto a plane — but the lift comes with significant parasitic drag, which reduces efficiency and drains batteries.

A cavitation plate is a flat surface with zero camber. It generates no lift and adds near-zero drag; its sole job is to act as a roof over the propeller and prevent ventilation. For electric outboards operating at displacement speeds, where preserving battery range is the priority, the flat V4A cavitation plate is the technically correct choice.

How Do You Install a Cavitation Plate? (3 Steps, No Drilling)

  1. Prepare your tools. You need a 5.5 mm wrench, a 2.0 mm hex screwdriver, a measuring tape and a pencil or masking tape.
  2. Position and mark. Place the plate on the shaft directly above the propeller, tilted slightly downwards. The recommended height is 1.5 to 2 cm above the propeller, measured from the tip of the plate. Mark the spot.
  3. Mount and secure. Remove the backing from the 3M adhesive tape, align the plate with your mark, close both halves and tighten the self-locking bolts. Done — the screws will not vibrate loose.
